Astronomers have discovered a new ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxy named Aquarius IV (Rubin J2201−0234) utilizing data from the Rubin-compatible implementation of the simple algorithm on the Rubin Observatory’s Early Data Product 2 (EDP2). Identified at an 8.0 sigma significance in g,r filter searches and 7.6 sigma in g,i filter searches, this distant stellar system expands our mapping of the galactic halo.
Mapping the Faintest Fringes of the Milky Way
The discovery of Aquarius IV marks another milestone in the systematic exploration of the local universe. According to findings detailed in the arXiv preprint (2608.02601v1), researchers hunted for ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs) by querying the EDP2 Object table with LSDB. The technical pipeline isolated stars designated by `refExtendedness = 0` exhibiting specific, clean photometric profiles. By filtering for blue colors ($g-r < 1$), low foreground interstellar extinction ($E(B-V) < 1$), and point spread function (PSF) magnitudes brighter than $g=25$, $r=24.5$, and $i=24.5$, the pipeline successfully carved out a pristine stellar sample.
Raw magnitude values were subsequently corrected for interstellar extinction. The analytical engine applied an isochrone matched-filter approach within color–magnitude space. This computational step is designed to single out arcminute-scale spatial overdensities of resolved stars. Researchers deployed a $tau=13$ Gyr, $Z=0.0001$ PARSEC-COLIBRI isochrone mapped directly across LSST bandpasses, scanning across distance moduli spanning $16.0 le (m-M)_0 le 23.5$ in rigorous 0.5 mag steps.
Cross-Matching Filters and Verifying Candidates
To eliminate false positives, the detection pipeline executed cross-matching routines across both $g,r$ and $g,i$ filter pairs. Aquarius IV emerged as the highest-ranked new detection within the dataset. Visual inspection of coadd images drawn from EDP2 alongside archival images provided by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) confirmed the reality of the structure. Investigators spotted a distinct excess of faint, blue, marginally-resolved stars clustered precisely at the coordinates of Aquarius IV.
Confidence in the physical reality of the satellite was further reinforced by locating a likely blue horizontal branch (BHB) star just 0.8 arcminutes away from the candidate centroid. A retroactive sweep of prior DECam data utilizing the simple algorithm revealed a historical, unflagged detection of Aquarius IV sitting at approximately 6 sigma significance, cementing its status as a bona fide stellar system rather than a statistical fluctuation.
Contextualizing Aquarius IV Within the Local Group
The discovery run did more than uncover a single new system. The methodology successfully recovered every single previously known ultra-faint Milky Way satellite located inside the EDP2 footprint. This roster includes Sagittarius II, Aquarius II, Aquarius III, and Virgo III, validating the efficacy of the Rubin-compatible pipeline for local group cartography.
