The captain of the French Rugby team suffers from a maxillo-zygomatic fracture after a violent shock to the face Thursday evening against Namibia. If he remains, for the moment, in the France group, his future in this world championship, however, seems compromised.

Bulky edema
The maxillo-zygomatic fracture is generally due to a direct impact on the cheekbone, as was the case for Antoine Dupont Thursday evening in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). A shock “which gives a sunken and unsightly appearance to the cheekbone”, notes the Aquitaine Center for Maxillofacial Surgery. The federation also did not indicate whether the fracture was accompanied by a displacement of the zygomatic bone. This complication can cause several functional disorders due to compression of the infra-orbital nerve. “This is responsible for disturbances in the sensitivity of the cheek, the lateral part of the nose, the upper lip and the upper teeth. These disorders generally resolve within a few weeks to a few months after the intervention. explains the Aquitaine maxillofacial surgery center.
Decision in the next two days
No operation is necessary if there is no displacement, either of the zygomatic or the floor of the orbit. In the event of displacement, surgical intervention must be performed less than ten days after the trauma in order to realign the fragments and allow the bone to consolidate in the correct position. “It is sometimes necessary to wait a few days for the edema to subside and for the examination of the mobility of the eye to be possible.” The same goes for maxillary fractures; doctors wait a few days for the area to deflate to decide whether intervention is necessary depending on the severity of the injury.
Crack or fracture, damage to the orbital floor or not, surgical intervention or not… Antoine Dupont will not be determined on his fate until the end of the weekend, the federation indicated. He could be left out of the squad for the next group match against Italy on October 6. The quarter-final will take place on Sunday October 15 – if France comes first in its group – in just over three weeks. Here again, the participation of Antoine Dupont seems compromised. Because even if surgery is not necessary, he must avoid contact with this weakened area of his face until it consolidates. But there is hope for the semi-final on Saturday October 21, more than four weeks away.
