Rumors Surrounding Dodgers’ Bid on Mets Right-Hander Justin Verlander and Potential Trade Options

The Dodgers have been mentioned frequently in the rumors regarding the fate of Mets right-hander Justin Verlander, with the Trade Deadline today at 6:00 pm ET. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic claimed that Los Angeles was one of three teams in the bid for the services of the three-time Cy Young Award winner, along with the Astros and los Orioles. However, Rosenthal adds that the Dodgers “seem to be discouraged” regarding how talks with the Mets are going.

Rosenthal says the Astros “seem to be the preferred destination” for Verlander. The right-hander pitched for Houston from 2017 to 2022 and according to what Rosenthal explained, part of Verlnader’s motivation is his good relationship with Astros owner Jim Crane.

For his part, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has mentioned Jack Flaherty as a possible piece for the Dodgers, as the Cardinals seem willing to trade the right-hander. And the Los Angeles Times recently reported that Eduardo Rodríguez (Tigres) and Mitch Keller would also be on Los Angeles’ radar.

According to Feinsand, acquiring Flaherty might be much easier for the Dodgers, since he has a contract that will expire at the end of this season. From him, Verlander has one more guaranteed year in 2024, an option for 2025 and a salary that would have to be negotiated around how much the Mets would cover. Also, he has a clause that allows him to reject any trade, so that would be another obstacle.
