Russia announces control of the Azovstal complex and the city of Mariupol

The Russian military confirmed on Friday the surrender of all Ukrainian soldiers present at the Azovstal industrial complex in the strategic city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine.
“Since May 16, 2,439 Azov (battalion) and Ukrainian soldiers trapped in the factory have surrendered. Today, May 20, the last group of 531 fighters has surrendered,” said Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry.
Konashenkov added that “the facilities of the underground site where the fighters were hiding are now under the complete control of the Russian armed forces.”
The source added that Russian President Vladimir Putin informed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu that “the complete liberation of the Azovstal complex and the city of Mariupol has been completed.”
The spokesman confirmed that the commander of the “Azov” battalion fighters on the spot surrendered and was transferred from the factory “in a special armored vehicle.”
