Russia complains about German Nord Stream investigation

A German court last week subpoenaed a Ukrainian diving instructor in connection with the sabotage against the Nord Stream gas pipeline in 2022. The man, who lived in Poland, has since fled to Ukraine.

The authorities in Moscow believe that the German investigation will result in no one being identified, reports Ria Novosti. The state-run Russian news agency refers to a statement from Oleg Tjapkin, head of the European Department in the Russian Foreign Ministry.

– We have raised the issue of Germany and other affected countries fulfilling their obligations under the UN’s anti-terrorist conventions. We have officially made similar demands on this issue bilaterally, including with Berlin, he says.

The gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2 were destroyed by several explosions off the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. The gas pipelines were built to transport Russian gas from Russia to Germany.

At the start, Russia was accused of being behind it, but investigations have since pointed in the direction of Ukraine.

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied that Ukraine was involved in the sabotage.
