Russia is moving to stop importing an essential metal used in strategic industries and rely on its local production

Russia – Russia is moving to stop its dependence on importing lithium, the main component in the battery industry, and is scheduled to begin meeting its needs for this metal starting in 2025.

Yevgeny Petrov, head of “Rosnider” (the body responsible for exploring underground resources in Russia), said in a meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin that Russia will begin, starting next year 2025, to meet the demand for lithium metal based on its reserves.

He recalled that in 2023, the Authority held large auctions to invest in mines containing lithium ore in the country, and within the framework of these auctions, the development of two huge mines, “Kolmozerskoye” and “Polmostondravskoye,” was awarded to a joint company between “Rosatom” and “Norsk Nickel.”

The head of the Russian Authority added that trial production from the “Kolmozerskoye” mine is scheduled to begin a year and a half after the award, that is, in 2025.

The Russian official pointed out that Russia is an importer of lithium metal, despite having reserves of it, but the situation will change in 2025. He said: “Next year our country will be supplied with lithium, which we import, and the same thing will happen with tungsten and niobium, but in the years 2027-2028.”

Lithium metal is the key to strategic industries such as the manufacture of electric batteries, consumer electronics, and the manufacture of components used in the nuclear industry, and in the space and transportation industries.

Russia ranks third in the world in terms of lithium reserves, and during the era of the Soviet Union it was in third place in the world in terms of production volume, but lithium mines were frozen (stopped) and for 25 years Russia did not mine lithium and relied on importing it.
