Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Thursday it uncovered a reconnaissance operation carried out by US intelligence agencies through Apple mobile devices.
“The FSB, together with the Russian Federal Protective Service, discovered an intelligence operation carried out by US intelligence agencies using Apple mobile devices,” he said in a statement.
“As part of securing Russian telecommunications infrastructure, anomalies specific to Apple mobile phone users have been identified, and they are caused by the operation of previously unknown malware that uses software vulnerabilities offered by the manufacturer”, he added.
According to the FSB, several thousand phones were affected.
In addition to domestic subscribers, foreign numbers and subscribers using SIM cards registered with diplomatic missions and embassies in Russia were affected, he said.
“Information obtained by the FSB demonstrates close cooperation between Apple and the United States National Intelligence Community … and confirms that Apple’s posted privacy policy is not true,” the FSB said.
