Russia seeks clarification from Biden over Nord Stream leak

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today, Wednesday, that US President Joe Biden should reveal whether Washington is behind the gas leak from Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines linking Russia to Europe.
“On February 7, 2022, Joe Biden said Nord Stream would be finished if Russia interfered in Ukraine,” the spokeswoman added, in social media posts.
“Biden is obligated to answer whether the United States carried out its threat,” she said.
The spokeswoman said Moscow would request a meeting of the UN Security Council on the leak.
“Russia intends to call an official meeting of the UN Security Council in the context of provocations related to the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines,” Zakharova wrote, via the Telegram app.
Three cases of gas leakage were observed in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea, preceded by two explosions.
The Kremlin said on Wednesday that it was “stupid and absurd” to conclude that Russia was behind the Nord Stream gas leak, which the European Union considered a “deliberate act”.
“It is quite predictable and stupid as it is also expected that there will be novels coming out like this – stupid and ridiculous as one might expect,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, after Ukraine said the leak was orchestrated by Moscow.
“The two lines were filled with gas ready to be pumped, and this gas is very valuable. Now this gas is evaporating into the air,” Peskov added.
He called on “everyone to think before making statements, and to wait for the results of the investigation.”
