Russia sends a ship with 650 thousand barrels of fuel to Cuba 2024-03-21 11:16:39

In the midst of the energy crisis, Cuba will soon receive a ship with 650 thousand barrels of crude oil from Russia. The shipment has already been completed from the Eurasian giant and it is expected to help alleviate the current situation on the Island.

Several sources cited by the EFE news agency show that the tanker left Russian soil on March 9.

According to some oil tanker tracking platforms, the ship should dock in the port of Matanzas at the end of this month of March.

This is the first shipment of crude oil from Moscow to Havana in about a year. The Russian order will arrive in Cuba after several high-level exchanges between both nations.

The Minister of Foreign Trade himself, Ricardo Cabrisas, visited the Eurasian country a few days ago. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, was on the Island in February.

Meanwhile, the state agency Prensa Latina reported that during Cabrisas’ stay, Russia granted a new loan to Havana. This is intended to guarantee the stable supply of oil, petroleum products, wheat and fertilizers.

The current crisis regarding the lack of electricity generation capacity is due to the drop in imports from allied countries. This was ratified by Cuba without mentioning names as close as Russia itself or Venezuela.

According to the Energy Institute of the University of TexasIn the first two months of the year, Caracas has exported only an average of 35,000 barrels per day (bpd) to Cuba. This figure is below the average of 57,000 bpd in 2023 and a long way from the 100,000 bpd in 2016.

Likewise, data show that Mexico sent more than 5 million barrels to the island last year, for a total value of $391 million dollars.
