Russia may be entering the gaming console game. President Vladimir Putin and his team have launched the idea of creating their own consoles to compete with the PS5 from the Japanese Sony and the Xbox Series X/S from the American Microsoft .
Here’s the plan: VK Group, the company behind the VK social network, would handle the design of the consoles. And for production, we count on GS Group, the kings of decoders in Russia. The deadline? They want to release everything by June 15, 2024, according to the Kotaku site. Suffice to say that this deadline is almost impossible to meet and I would not want to be in the place of those who will have to take up this challenge.
Why try to create your own consoles now?
The initiative is not Russia’s first foray into the gaming industry – the country attempted to integrate gaming communities last year, and considered creating its own game engine the year before that. . But it marks a notable shift since the majority of the gaming industry cut ties with the country, due to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russia is trying, because it has been rejected, to create its own industry. Remember, many video game companies have expressed their support for the Ukrainian people, donated to humanitarian initiatives and matched donations made by their employees: like publishers and studios like Riot Games, which donated more than 5 million euros, while CD Project, Epic Games and Activision Blizzard decided to stop sales of their games in Russia.
An ambitious but unrealistic project according to experts

The development of these tools must be ready by June 2024, in just over two months.
