Finnish police detained a Russian citizen on suspicion of illegally crossing the Russian-Finnish border on July 1.

According to RBC, the border service of South-Eastern Finland reported that the man was detained on Saturday near Lappeenranta. The police handed over the suspect to the border guards.

It is reported that the Russian asked for asylum in Finland. The preliminary investigation of the case continues, for the investigation the Finnish side contacted Russian colleagues.

Earlier, the Finnish Embassy reported that last year the Finnish authorities registered 1,172 applications for asylum by Russians. 346 decisions were made, 96 of them were positive.
