Serebnikov, one of 21 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, highlights the devastating marriage of Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky to a young woman.

It traces the transformation of Antonina, embodied by Alina Mikhailova, from a pious and resolute fiancée to a rejected wife in an ill-fated marriage.

The film portrays Tchaikovsky, who prefers the company of men, as a troubled genius with an influential personality, but is negatively affected by his young wife and his decision to marry her.
