Another Monday turned black for Russian figure skating. On the same day, three couples announced their breakup. There were no prerequisites for this, so the news about the changes came as a bolt from the blue.

Now every skater begins a new stage in life.

Study and coaching instead of sports

Yasmina Kadyrova and Valery Kolesov were the first to announce the termination of cooperation. The couple has been performing together since February 2022. Their best result was silver at the Russian Grand Prix last season.

Figure skaters coach Arthur Minchuk noted that the reason for the breakup of the couple was Kolesov’s injury, which had been bothering him a lot lately. In addition, Valery increasingly thought about a non-sports career. Coach Tamara Moskvina told Match TV that the skater intends to graduate from university.

Kolesov himself confirmed the information about going to school. Moreover, he completely ends his sports career. Valery admitted that the decision was not easy, but he does not intend to change it.

— I always worked only for results, I was interested in it. I always wanted to win. But I understand that I have reached my limit. I ended my career as an athlete. And period, without pauses and all that,” Kolesov told Match TV.

Now Valery is busy with his studies and at the same time trying his hand at coaching. He is already working with a group of young skaters and helping an amateur girl from St. Petersburg. While Kolesov does not see himself as a real coach, he likes the first steps in his new business.

As for Yasmina Kadyrova, she is looking for a new partner. Her coaches are looking through available skaters, and it is not yet clear who will skate with the girl. But Yasmina’s desire to ride has not gone away. This, in particular, is noted by Honored Trainer of Russia Tatyana Mishina.

— I followed the couple. We worked with Yasmina, she is a diligent, hard-working girl who found herself in pairs skating. I think they will find her a partner. We are rooting for Yasmina, we would like her partner to be worthy. She always had a desire to show herself, to prove herself, she is a good guy,” Mishina told Match TV.

Reason for separation – leaving for Tutberidze

The second couple who ended their working relationship were Varvara Cheremnykh and Daniil Butenko. Together they were vice-champions of Russia among juniors, medalists of all-Russian competitions and participants in the national championship. Their career together lasted three years.

Butenko announced the breakup by publishing a large post on social networks. According to him, the reason is a change of coach: now Daniil trains at the headquarters of Eteri Tutberidze. At the same time, the skater addressed several warm words to his former team.

“Most of all I am grateful to Varvara and the coaching staff of Sergei Dobroskokov. There may have been disagreements on some things, but I will never forget the path we took. Varya, Sergei Vladimirovich and I went through a lot together. I am immensely happy that I had the opportunity to skate with such a great partner and in such a wonderful team of coaching staff. “I love you,” Butenko wrote.

It is still unknown who Varvara Cheremnykh will ride with. But the search for a new partner is already underway.

“From now on we won’t ride together.”

Another duet that ceased to exist on Monday is the dancing couple of Milana Zhabina and Dmitry Pekin. The skaters were not noticed at prestigious adult tournaments, and they were not rated very highly among juniors. Their most notable achievements are silver at the Russian Student Spartakiad and bronze at the Moscow Cup.

Both athletes briefly commented on the breakup. Milana called the period of working with Dmitry a wonderful stage in her life.

“Thank you very much to Dima for our joint work, for our results, successes and overall good time together,” Zhabina wrote in her Telegram channel.

Beijing was more laconic.

“From this moment on, Milana and I no longer skate together,” the skater noted on social networks, adding a few routine thanks.

Now both Milana and Dmitry are looking for new partners. For now, they are training separately.

Not a very pleasant coincidence

The breakup of three couples on one day is a rare event even for Russian figure skating. You won’t even remember when this happened! Of course, this is not a very pleasant coincidence, especially for those who follow greenhouses and dancers.

The only hope left is that the skaters will quickly find new partners, get along with them in character and show a high level. Then the previous partners will finally remain in the past.
