(Keystone-ATS) The Ukrainian army announced on Monday its withdrawal from the small village of Lastochkyné, near the town of Avdiïvka (which fell) more than a week ago. Russian forces, for their part, claimed its capture.

“The Ukrainian armed forces withdrew from the village of Lastochkyne in order to organize defense,” Dmytro Lykhovy, the spokesperson for the Ukrainian operational command in this area, said on television. The Russian Ministry of Defense declared on Telegram that it had “liberated” this village, continuing its push into this sector, following having already taken control of Avdiïvka in mid-February.

The capture of this industrial city constituted the first real major territorial gain of the Russian army since the conquest of Bakhmut in May 2023.

Despite significant human losses, the Russian army seems confident and has claimed the capture of several small villages in recent weeks.

Lack of men and ammunition

Faced with it, the Ukrainian forces suffer from a lack of ammunition and struggle to recruit. In recent days, Ukrainian officials, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, have called on Western allies to deliver more weapons, and more quickly.

“The question of whether Ukraine will lose, whether the situation will be very difficult and whether there will be a large number of victims depends on you, on our partners, on the Western world,” warned the Ukrainian president on Sunday, while his country has just entered its third year of war once morest Russia.
