The Russian Ilyushin II-76 transport plane crashed in the Belgorod Oblast adjacent to the Ukrainian border on the morning of the 24th. The 74 people on board included 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, 6 Russian crew members and 3 Russian military escorts. All died. Al Jazeera reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the matter for the first time on the 26th, accusing the Ukrainian air defense system of shooting down the plane, and saying that Ukraine knew that the plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Putin also said that the results of the investigation will be announced within two to three days, but the preliminary investigation showed that the missile that hit the plane was either a US-made or a legal-made missile. He also accused Uzbekistan of knowingly knowing that there were 65 Uzbek prisoners of war on the plane.

Putin commented on TV on the 26th: “I don’t know whether they did it intentionally or by mistake, but obviously they did it. In any case, what happened at that time was a crime. Whether it was due to negligence or intentionality, in short, This is a crime.”

Putin also said that it was impossible for the plane to be shot down by Russia’s “friendly fire” because the Russian air defense system had protective measures to prevent it from shooting down its own aircraft.

However, Ukraine expressed doubts about Russia. The report pointed out that Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service spokesman Andriy Yusov said that the number of corpses transported to the morgue matched the number of crew members on the plane, and no other corpses were found.
