(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Cho Seong-heum = Archyde.com reported on the 25th (local time) that about 5,000 mercenary prisoners who were recruited by the Wagner Group, a private mercenary company in Russia, and sent to the Ukrainian front, were pardoned after the contracts for participating in the war expired.

Yevgeny Prigozin, head of the Wagner Group, said on Telegram that day, “To date, more than 5,000 people have been released under pardon after completing contracts with the Wagner Group.”

He also argued that the recidivism rate of those who were pardoned after contracting with the Wagner Group was 0.31%, only 1/10 to 1/20 of general statistics.

“In the coming weeks, thousands of Russian prisoners who fought for the Wagner Group are likely to be pardoned and released,” the UK Ministry of Defense said in an intelligence report on the 21st.

He pointed out that the influx of violent criminals with shocking combat experiences into society would pose a danger to Russian society.

Prigogine, who has been called ‘Putin’s chef’ by running a catering company that supplies food to various events sponsored by the Russian government, admitted in September last year that he was the founder of the Wagner Group.

The Wagner Group, designated by the US government as an important international criminal organization, has also been deployed on the main front in Ukraine, and is currently at the forefront of the Russian military operation to occupy Bahmut, the fiercest battleground of the war.

Since the middle of last year, Prigozhin has toured prisons in Russia and recruited prisoners as mercenaries. He promised amnesty and monetary compensation for fighting on the battlefields of Ukraine for six months.

Western officials estimated that 50,000 Wagner mercenaries were used in the war in Ukraine, of which 40,000 were convict mercenaries recruited from Russian prisons.

The UK Ministry of Defense estimates that around half of the poorly trained and poorly equipped convict mercenaries may have been killed or wounded.
