A Russian military officer was killed in a car bomb explosion in Russian-annexed Crimea, according to local officials and regional reports. The blast occurred on a street in Sevastopol on Wednesday morning, bringing emergency personnel to the scene within minutes as investigators opened a criminal case into a suspected terror act.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-installed governor of the occupied peninsula, confirmed that an officer was inside the vehicle when it exploded. While Razvozhayev initially did not identify the victim, unofficial Russian Telegram channels, including Baza—which is said to have links to Russia’s intelligence services—identified the man as Valery Trankovsky, a captain of the 1st rank in the Black Sea Fleet. Other Telegram channels alternatively named the victim as Captain First Rank Robert Shageyev, a former Ukrainian naval officer who defected to Russia during the 2014 annexation of Crimea and reportedly commanded the Ukrainian submarine Zaporizhzhia at the time.
Investigation and Responsibility
Russian emergency personnel arrived at the Sevastopol blast site at approximately 10 a.m. local time, roughly six minutes after the detonation, but the officer succumbed to his injuries shortly after. According to the Russian media outlet Mash, the victim had been under surveillance for about a week before an improvised explosive device placed under the driver’s side was detonated remotely.
An unnamed source in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) told the Kyiv Independent that the killing was carried out by the agency. The source described Trankovsky as a war criminal who had ordered cruise missile launches from the Black Sea against civilian sites in Ukraine. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported that Trankovsky served as chief of staff for a missile boat brigade involved in the full-scale invasion.
Separately, state news agency TASS quoted the Federal Security Service (FSB) as saying that a Russian national woman had been arrested on suspicion of assassinating the officer on behalf of Ukrainian special services.
Broader Security Context in Occupied Territories
The targeted killing in Sevastopol follows a series of deaths involving senior Russian military personnel in occupied territories throughout the conflict. In October, Ukrainian military intelligence reported that a senior Russian pilot complicit in a deadly attack on a shopping mall in Kremenchuk was found dead with hammer wounds to the head. That pilot, named as Dmitry Golenkov, was linked to the June 2022 missile strike on civilians at the Amstor mall.
Additionally, Russian military bloggers and independent outlets reported the death of Major General Pavel Klimenko, who commanded the Fifth Separate Motor Rifle Brigade in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. While initial reports suggested Klimenko was killed in a drone strike while riding a motorcycle near Krasnohorivka, the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel claimed that account was a cover-up for an incident involving severe alcoholic intoxication prior to his death.
