This weapon was initially developed for use by the Russian Navy.

UK intelligence services have analyzed reports that Russia has fired its new weapon for the first time missile hypersonique Zircon on Ukraine. According to a report from the Kiev Institute of Scientific Research and Forensic Expertise, the Kremlin used its 3M22 Tsirkon hypersonic missile on February 7 in an attack on the Ukrainian capital.

This missile would be capable of reaching a speed of Mach 9 (nine times the speed of sound) and would have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers.

“A significant challenge for Ukrainian air defense”

This weapon was initially developed for use by the Russian Navy. Except that, as the British Ministry of Defense points out, theRussia does not have ships in the Black Sea capable of carrying this type of missile, raising questions about the launch method used by Moscow. Thus, intelligence across the Channel suggests that the Russian K-300P Bastion-P coastal defense missile system may have been adapted for this purpose.

“If its use is confirmed, it would represent a significant challenge for Ukrainian air defense due to its speed and maneuverability”concludes the MoD.
