The Russian Navy has started this Wednesday a new operation of naval exercises in the waters of the Baltic Sea, known as ‘Ocean Shield 2023’ and in which more than thirty warships and other types of vessels participate.

As detailed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the main objective of these training sessions is to test the readiness of the naval fleet to protect national interests in an “operationally important” area.

The Defense portfolio has highlighted that the operations are carried out under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, according to information collected by the Russian news agency Interfax.

Along with the more than 30 warships, Russia has deployed 20 support ships, 30 naval aviation aircraft and around 6,000 military personnel to the waters of the Baltic Sea.

“During the exercise, it is planned to test the readiness of the Navy forces to protect the national interests of the Russian Federation in an operationally important area and the coherence of the work of the headquarters at various levels in the command and control of forces” , Admiral Evmenov has told.
