The accident occurred on Sunday morning (January 21) in Afghanistan’s northeastern province of Badakhshan, Zabihullah Amiri, head of the local Department of Culture and Information, told Tolo news agency. A search team has been sent to the area, Amiri added.

According to Rosaviatsia, the plane was a Falcon 10 corporate jet, registered to a Russian company. The plane was en route from Gaya in India to Moscow via Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent.

Rosaviatsia data shows that there were 4 crew members and 2 passengers on board.

Afghan Taliban government spokesman Abdul Wahid Rayan said in a statement at X (formerly Twitter) that the plane crashed due to engine failure. He also confirmed that there were “seven Russians abroad” and that the plane was owned by a Moroccan company.

The Falcon 10 was the first business jet from French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation, produced from 1971 to 1989, but remains popular on the secondary market.
