A Russian Antonov-26 military transport aircraft crashed in the Crimean Peninsula on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of all 29 people on board, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.
The ministry stated that contact with the aircraft was lost at approximately 18:00 Moscow time while it was undertaking a scheduled flight. Search and rescue teams subsequently located the wreckage, confirming the deaths of the six crew members and 23 passengers.
Initial investigations have revealed no evidence of external damage to the aircraft, leading authorities to suspect a technical malfunction as the likely cause of the crash. A full investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Antonov-26 is a twin-turboprop, high-wing aircraft commonly used for military transport, particularly for personnel and light cargo. It has been in service with the Russian and Soviet air forces for decades, and numerous variants exist.
The crash occurred amidst heightened tensions in the region following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and continued military operations. Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, remains a key strategic location for Moscow, housing significant military assets, including naval bases.
Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the crash. Independent verification of the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently limited.
The Russian Ministry of Defence has not released details regarding the passengers’ identities or their intended destination. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
