Russian response to Ukraine’s request to exclude Russian rowers from the 2024 Paris Olympics

Russia – Two-time Olympic champion in biathlon Dmitry Vasiliev responded harshly to the Ukrainian sports authorities’ request to exclude Russian rowers from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

RIA Novosti quoted Vasiliev’s statements in which he said, “The Olympic Committee of Ukraine lost common sense a long time ago, so you should not care about it.”

He stressed that in this case it is necessary to rely on the law, and the Russian champion considered that “the Ukrainian Olympic Committee wants to influence the entire world sport through illegal actions.”

Earlier yesterday, Sunday, May 5, the Ukrainian sports authorities sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee demanding that Russian rowers not be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris, considering that sports teams with Russian or Belarusian passports cannot be accepted.

Nine Russian rowers are scheduled to participate in a qualifying tournament from May 8 to 9, where they will have the opportunity to compete for qualification tickets to the Olympic Games in Paris, from July 26 to August 11.

Russians and Belarusians were allowed to compete in the Olympic Games with neutral status. At the same time, athletes who support the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, or who have connections to the armed forces or security services of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Games. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
