Russian Threats to Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant: IAEA Reports

The Russians have again laid mines around the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia, according to the latest situation report published on Friday by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

Explosive devices were placed between the inner and outer fences of the nuclear power plant, near the front line, according to the document. Mines were removed from this location in November.

The news is “incompatible” with security standards, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi criticized. The latter also warned that the Russian management of the nuclear power plant is unlikely to carry out full maintenance of the facility this year.

A work plan was presented to the IAEA’s permanent observers on site last week, but the nuclear agency considers that it has shortcomings. “This maintenance must be carried out in order to guarantee nuclear safety,” demanded Mr. Grossi.

Part of the emergency power system failed for eight hours on Thursday, according to the IAEA.

Although the power supply for cooling the irradiating equipment was not interrupted during this period, Grossi once again expressed concern about the unreliability of safety systems designed to prevent a nuclear accident.
