Russian-Turkish Natural Gas Platform Agreement: Progress and Potential Challenges

Moscow and Ankara should reach an agreement on the creation of a natural gas platform in Turkey in the near future, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday.

He said Russian company Gazprom and Turkish company Botas cooperated closely and discussed the project roadmap.

“I am sure that agreements on the practical implementation of this project will be reached in the near future,” Novak said in an interview with the Rossiya 24 TV channel.

Last year, Russia proposed creating a gas hub in Turkey to replace lost sales to Europe, fulfilling Ankara’s long-standing desire to serve as a trading exchange for countries suffering from energy shortage.

The talks have not made much progress as Turkey suffered devastating earthquakes in February and focused on elections in May. Disagreements over who should be responsible for the platform also delayed negotiations, two sources familiar with the project told Archyde.com.
