Recently, Russia has used a new weapon in the war against Ukraine. The so-called glide bomb poses a “very serious threat” to the Ukrainians. Experts even assume that the weapon could influence the course of the Ukrainian counter-offensive.

Russia is said to have recently used a new weapon in its war of aggression against Ukraine that could change the course of the war. This is reported by the British newspaper “Telegraph”. According to the report, the so-called glide bomb could even have an impact on the upcoming Ukrainian counter-offensive. According to Ukrainian and Western experts, the weapon could force Kiev to adjust its strategy at the last minute.

Unlike other bombs, glide bombs, as the name suggests, can glide using their wings instead of falling vertically to the ground. This allows them to reach more distant destinations. In addition, the bombs fly so low for an extended period of time that they are harder to detect by anti-radar systems.

The additional range allows the pilots to fire the bombs from further away from the front line and not have to fly to the dangerous front line. Information gathered by Ukraine shows that most of the glide bomb attacks are carried out from a distance of 40-50 kilometers inside Russian territory, so that the fighter jets do not get within range of Kiev’s air defenses.

Bomb cheaper to produce for Russians

The glide bombs posed a “very serious threat,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuriy Ihnat told the British newspaper. It was deployed for the first time on March 24th. Since then, according to Ukrainian data, about 20 glide bombs have been dropped a day. “At the moment the enemy is using this advantage on the border with Russia, on the front and on the coast. Glide bombs are being dropped intensively in all these regions,” said Ihnat.

The glide bombs first made headlines when a fighter jet accidentally dropped a bomb over the Russian border town of Belgorod, damaging buildings and injuring at least three people.

The range and abilities of the various gliding weapons differ greatly. According to reports, the bombs can have a range of up to 75 miles (approx. 121 kilometers) and hit a target within a 10 meter radius. It is assumed that the glide bombs used by Russia have a range of between 30 and 45 miles (about 48 and 72 kilometers).

For the Russians, the new weapon also has the advantage that it is cheaper and easier to produce than rockets, they say. In view of the massive loss of expensive high-precision weapons, glide bombs are now Russia’s method of choice. The weapon will also give Russian fighter pilots the ability to leverage their air power to influence ground operations in ways that have previously been difficult for them to do.
