Russia, in the course of contacts with the Republic of South Africa (South Africa), will clarify its position on membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC), said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin in March. In August, the BRICS summit is to be held in South Africa, to which Mr. Putin has been invited.
Mr. Peskov explained that the summit “will be preceded by bilateral contacts” between Russia and South Africa. “We will clarify their position,” the Kremlin spokesman said during a press call.
According to him, Russia “takes and will continue to take an active part in the work” of the BRICS. “And, of course, we will take part in the work of the summit, which will be held in South Africa,” Dmitry Peskov added.
Yesterday, April 25, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party in South Africa had decided to withdraw the country from the jurisdiction of the ICC. Later, the Office of the President of South Africa denied the information about the withdrawal of the country from the jurisdiction of the ICC.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. Court filings state that they are “allegedly responsible for war crimes related to the illegal deportation of the population (children) from Ukraine.” According to the terms of the Rome Statute governing the work of the court, if the President of the Russian Federation and Ms. Lvova-Belova arrive in countries that are parties to it, they will have to be arrested.
