RX-STORM RX870 Three-Mode Mechanical Keyboard Review: Features, Build, and Performance

2024-03-27 11:09:03

The RX-STORM RX870 three-mode mechanical keyboard has a total of 3 colors to choose from, Punisher, Lollipop, and Qianyun. The one I have is a mainly black Punisher, and the keyboard is equipped with TTC Yunhai switches. Although the overall keyboard is configured at 87%, it has 88 keys. This special key will be mentioned later. What is worth integrating is that the upper and lower shells of the keyboard are made of thick rubber material. The rubber material is harder and soft to the touch. The new shell material makes the keyboard look brighter. The disadvantage is that the rubber surface easily leaves fingerprints or sweat stains on the hands.

The overall size of the RX870 three-mode mechanical keyboard is 370mm*140mm*38mm. The keyboard adopts a PCBA-GASKET structure. This structure with built-in multiple fillers is widely used by domestic keyboards. The battery capacity built into the keyboard is 4000mah. If used continuously for 8 hours a day, the battery life can reach about 10-15 days. Overall, the battery life is a bit short. Although the keyboard does not have a metal positioning plate, it weighs 1380g and is very heavy in the hand.

Three-mode connection + hot-swappable shaft has become the standard configuration of domestic keyboards. However, there are basically only a few users who actually use multi-mode connection and shaft replacement. Most users use 2.4G most, and occasionally With Bluetooth, the wired connection is reduced to being used only when charging. The shaft will basically be used until something goes wrong, and very few users will replace it with other shafts. The biggest advantage of hot-swappable shafts is that once there is a problem with the shaft, it is very convenient to replace and repair it by yourself. The keyboard supports multiple modes of RGB lighting effects, which can be switched through key combinations.

In the keyboard structure diagram, you can see a variety of fillers inside the keyboard. What I personally don’t understand is the single-key slotted PCB. This solution makes the axis of the PCB board press and support softer, and the force feedback will be less. obvious.

Two-color injection molded PBT SA ball cap solution

The × button on the right side of F12 is used to hide/show the desktop by default. I often set this function on the side button of the mouse. Now the keyboard has a dedicated button by default. Of course, you can use the driver to customize this button. Other functions.

You can see the light bars on both sides of the keyboard.

From left to right at the back is a 2.4G receiver storage compartment with a magnetic suction function, a three-mode switch in the middle, and a USB-C interface on the right.

Metal logo and nameplate.

The keyboard only has one height of legs, but the overall shape makes the back of the keyboard a little taller.

PBT keycap close-up

The concavity of the SA ball cap is more obvious, and the edge of the keycap has a very obvious sense of boundary when typing with fingers. Although the keycaps are made of PBT, the surface of the keycaps is very bright, just like the gloss of oiled ABS keycaps, but it does not have the sticky feeling of oiled ABS keycaps. This kind of feel is very novel.

You can see at the bottom of the keycap that the water outlet is very smooth.

The large buttons adopt a satellite axis solution, and the feel of the large buttons is very good, and the up and down movements are very smooth and smooth.

The TTC Yunhai axis is a linear axis with a total button stroke of 3.6mm and a trigger stroke of 1.5mm. The trigger stroke of the axis is between the 2mm of the traditional cherry switch and the 1.08mm of the Quicksilver switch. This trigger feel can be said to be Neither fast nor slow. The triggering force of the shaft is 42gf, and the triggering feel is relatively light. A long spring is used in the shaft, so the rebound of the shaft is very close to the hand. The key life of the TTC Yunhai switch is 80 million times. Although it does not reach the 100 million times of the TTC high-end switch, the life of this key is relatively long.

The TTC Yunhai switch moves up and down very smoothly when typing. The inside of the axis is often well lubricated. The trigger of the axis is light, so people with heavy hands may accidentally touch it. After using it for a period of time, Will adapt to the rhythm of keystrokes. The bottom-out sound of ordinary keys is a snapping, high-resistance feeling. Only the big keys will be dull when they bottom out. After all, the key structure is obviously different.

Shaft parameter table

After unplugging the shaft, you can see the holes that support hot swapping. The keyboard supports 5-pin shafts. The black part under the white positioning plate is made of custom poron cotton. The foaming surface feels like the previous soundproof earplugs. of memory foam.

TTC Cloud Sea Axis

The shaft body is a 5-pin design, the shrapnel and terminals are made of different materials, and a condenser is installed in the shaft.

When the shaft body is pressed down, 1mm will be exposed.

When the shaft body is disassembled, it can be seen that the spring piece is made of alloy copper, the terminal is made of electroplated silver material, and the spring is long.

The bottom of the shaft is designed with a round head, so the knocking sound will not be muffled.

Summary: The overall workmanship of the keyboard is excellent, and there are no faults in the details. The rubber shell feels very skin-like, but it is easily stained by fingerprints or sweat stains. The three-mode solution of traditional mechanical keyboards is compatible with various platforms, and the keyboard supports multiple modes of lighting effects, and the lighting effects can be adjusted through key combinations and drivers. The two-color injection molded PBT keycaps feel very interesting. The concave shape of the SA ball cap is so obvious that when typing, the edge of the keycap feels very clear when your fingers touch it. Moreover, the surface of the keycap does not have the traditional matte frosted grainy feel of PBT material. , but a polished mirror feel. The keyboard uses a PCBA-GASKET structure, which is an upgraded version of the GASKET structure. Fortunately, the single-key slotted PCB does not make the key force feedback soft, and the feel of the TTC Yunhai axis can be fully released. The feel of the Yunhai axis is neutral but the trigger force is relatively light. From a technical point of view, the overall craftsmanship of the Yunhai axis is also neutral. The shrapnel is made of copper alloy and the terminals are electroplated because of the material. If it is a high-end TTC axis, it will be The entire electroplating process will increase the cost of the shaft, plus the life of the shaft is 80 million times, so the Yunhai shaft is a relatively compromised solution in terms of manufacturing technology. The keyboard has a built-in 4000mah lithium battery. When using it for 8 hours a day with all lights turned off, the battery life can reach 10-15 days. I personally feel that the battery life is a little short. From my usage habits, I usually turn off the RGB lights. After all, nowadays The keycaps of some keyboards are not light-transmissive, and the lighting effect in the gaps between the keycaps is pitiful. It is better to not turn on the light to fully support the battery life.
