RYAN Gosling went all out as Ken at the 2024 Oscars with his entertaining and goofy performance of the song “I’m Just Ken” from the original soundtrack to the film “Barbie”.

The song was one of two songs from “Barbie” nominated for best original song at the Oscars. Billie Eilish’s song, “What Was I Made For?”, is another.

Before the performance, Gosling’s “Barbie” co-star, Simu Liu, announced to the audience the Oscars and asked them to turn on their cell phone lights and sing Gosling’s song.

Gosling, bathed in purple light and wearing a sparkly pink suit and pink gloves, began singing “I’m Just Ken” while sitting in the audience behind Margot Robbie, who couldn’t help but laugh.

Then, he made his way to the stage, where he was joined by Mark Ronson on guitar and several backup dancers. Slash also appeared on stage after contributing guitar to the song.

Joining Gosling on stage were his fellow actors Ken, Simu Liu, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

At one point, Gosling returned to the audience and held the microphone to his “Barbie” costars, Greta Gerwig, Robbie and America Ferrera, who all sang along with him. He also asked his “La La Land” star, Emma Stone, to sing along.

In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, there was a lot of mystery about whether Gosling would appear on stage to sing “I’m Just Ken” live. She chose not to sing the song “City of Stars” from “La La Land” at the 2017 Oscars, where her partner, John Legend, performed as a singer. Gosling did not confirm his involvement in appearing at the Oscars until several weeks before the Academy Awards ceremony.

Variety’s Marc Malkin popped the question to “Barbie” soundtrack producer and “I’m Just Ken” co-writer, Mark Ronson, on the 2024 Grammys red carpet, when Gosling still hasn’t fully committed to appearing at the Oscars. Ronson said that it would be a “dream” for him to perform live with Gosling as the lead vocalist.

When asked if he might substitute another singer if Gosling didn’t want to perform live during the Oscars, Ronson immediately shot down the idea.

“No. I think if Ryan didn’t do it, then we wouldn’t do it,” the producer said.

Before “I’m Just Ken” became an official Oscar nominee, Gosling himself was coy about singing live during the awards show.

“Nah, I wasn’t invited. And I didn’t think about it until now, and now that’s the only thing I’m going to think about,” Gosling recently told W magazine last month. “Do you get paid to sing at the Oscars? Do you have to drive yourself? How much is involved? They at least pick you up, right?”

Gosling is present at the 2024 Oscars as a nominee in the best supporting category thanks to his work in “Barbie”. Overall, this blockbuster comedy film by Greta Gerwig received eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture. (variety/Z-3)
