Ryanair Pilot Strike: Cancellations & Updates at Charleroi Airport

2023-07-28 17:10:00

Forty-six Ryanair flights will be canceled on Sunday July 30 departing from and arriving at Charleroi airport due to a strike by Belgian pilots from the Irish company, the airport announced on its website on Friday. Twenty-two additional flights are also canceled for Saturday, bringing their number to 50.

The flights concerned by the strike movement on Sunday are round trips scheduled between 6:20 a.m. and 10:55 p.m., to, in particular, Venice, Riga, Tangier, Nîmes, Biarritz and Seville.

On Saturday, fifty flights were finally canceled, 22 more than what was announced on Thursday.

Didier Lebbe, permanent secretary of the CNE, was the guest of LN24 this Friday, July 28 to take stock of the situation. “I don’t think Ryanair expected such a strong reaction from its pilots,” he said when asked if management did not hear the demands of its pilots.

Does he still expect something from Ryanair today? “When I see how it happened the last time, I have a lot of fear. We are faced with an extremely arrogant and very provocative company. I have never seen that ! When she comes to our house, she offers us illegal things. This company thinks it can do anything,” he says.

“Intimidation, blackmail and threats are common practices at Ryanair. It’s been like this for 25 years. There are only reactions. It’s a mafia that has its tentacles all over Europe! Al Capone was a gangster and we knew where he lived but we didn’t know how to stop him. I feel like it’s the same with Michael O’Leary. I’m not saying he kills people, but he doesn’t respect rights in his business and we manage to arrest this individual. He’s a mobster!” he said.

”The important thing for us is not to strike and annoy the passengers, but to hurt the company economically. We want people to know that until the cases are resolved at Ryanair, we will continue to go on small strikes a few days a month but for a long time. For it to touch the wallet because touching the image, Michael O’Leary doesn’t give a damn, we’ve seen it. But his wallet, that he doesn’t care about and when he sees that reservations are going to decrease, I think he will come back to us with another speech”, claims the permanent secretary of the CNE.

The strike movement only concerns the Belgian pilots of Ryanair. Passengers are invited to regularly consult the Ryanair website and that of Charleroi airport to find out if their flight is maintained.

The company is obliged to offer an alternative flight free of charge to the passengers concerned. If the latter does not suit them, they are then entitled to demand reimbursement of their tickets.

A Belgian pilot: “If passengers book a ticket with Ryanair until October 2024, there is a good chance that their plane will not take off”
