S for the elite? OPPO explains why foldable phones must remain expensive

The Find N2 Flip is OPPO’s latest foldable that is investing more and more in this sector, but this does not mean that mobile phones with flexible screens will become more accessible. That’s what the company itself said during a conference that took place today at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona.

According to Billi Zhang, vice president of international sales at OPPO, foldables are still so expensive because their adoption rate by the population is still low. For comparison purposes, the most affordable foldable at the moment is the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which is officially priced at $999 at Samsung’s US store.

Thus, Zhang says companies are still not making much money with foldables, a fact that also discourages many of them from entering this sector.

Meanwhile, the hope is that foldables will become more reliable, because when paying a lot for a smartphone it is expected that it will have good durability, which unfortunately is not yet a reality for many cell phones with delicate flexible screens.
