SA Fuel Price Hike: April Sees R5-R8/L Increase & Beyond

by

South African motorists are facing substantial fuel price increases in April, with projections indicating a potential surge of between R5 and R8 per litre. The anticipated hikes stem from a combination of rising international oil prices and a weakening Rand against the US dollar.

According to the Automobile Association (AA), fuel price fluctuations are currently being closely monitored. The AA notes that it reserves the right to craft changes to its systems and data collection processes, acknowledging potential variations and discrepancies in the information provided. The organization explicitly disclaims liability for damages arising from data inaccuracies resulting from these changes.

Petrol Pulse reports that the increases will affect both inland and coastal regions, with real-time updates available to consumers. The platform, which sources data directly from the Department of Energy, allows users to sign up for alerts regarding price changes.

Fuel SA details current prices for various fuel types, including Unleaded 93 and 95, and diesel with different PPM levels. As of March 9, 2026, specific price figures are not publicly available on the site, but the platform offers an API for businesses to integrate real-time fuel price data into their systems. The API is priced at R59 per 1,000 requests per month.

Petrol-Price.co.za provides a source for up-to-date fuel prices across South Africa, allowing users to compare inland and coastal rates. The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa too publishes current and past fuel prices, categorized by coastal and Gauteng regions for the year 2026.

The scale of the projected increase has prompted discussion about alternative transportation options. MyBroadband highlighted a R2.07 petrol price increase as a potential incentive for South Africans to consider switching to electric vehicles.

As of today, the Department of Energy has not released official figures for the April fuel price adjustments.
