Saalfelden: New bridge brings safety and relief

A bottleneck during floods is a thing of the past thanks to the relocation of the traffic route.

The residents of western Dorfheimerstrasse have so far been confronted with an average of 3,700 vehicles per day. As of this week, the section is a dead end and ends at the Urslau stream bed. The new Dorfheimer Bridge was built around 250 meters away, and the road will now run through a commercial instead of a residential area. Mayor Erich Rohrmoser (SPÖ) described it at the opening last Friday: “The Urslau flood protection cooperative founded last year and this bridge – these are once-in-a-century projects that have now been successful.”

It was a complex planning and negotiation process until construction, including the access road, could begin in November 2022. The starting point was the fact that the flow cross section in the area of the existing bridge is too small and the bridge represents a dangerous bottleneck during floods. Initially, the municipality examined whether it was possible to raise the structure. Various variants were developed – including a lifting bridge.

After extensive consultations with specialist planners, it became clear that an acceptable solution could not be implemented due to the dense residential development at the current location. In addition, a replacement bridge would not have improved the traffic burden on residents and the dangerous situation in the B 164 intersection area. The municipality therefore decided to build a new building in the commercial area at the western entrance to Saalfelden. For this solution, land had to be taken from private owners. Rohrmoser: “We are happy and grateful that after intensive negotiations in the interests of the public, agreements were reached with all landowners.”

Construction work began in autumn 2022. The torrent and avalanche control department (WLV) built the foundations and abutments for the new bridge. Last summer, the access road was built via Bahnmeisterweg and the bridge structure was installed. On January 19th, the new Dorfheimer Bridge was ceremoniously opened and opened to traffic.

Now the old bridge is being removed so that there will no longer be any danger of blockages at this critical point on the Urslau in the future. “A bottleneck is being eliminated,” says Franz Anker from the WLV. “The current solution is a very successful solution when it comes to flood protection.” The investment volume amounts to around 3.3 million euros. Baucon ZT GmbH was responsible for planning and construction management, and WLV and Strabag were responsible for execution.
