Only Brad Binder and Marc Márquez used slick tires in Q1 on a drying track and thus made it into Q2. The sun was now shining over the Sachsenring, but the conditions were still difficult to assess with some wet spots.
Marc Márquez then crashed on his third lap of Q2, on course for the best time as he had in Q1, at Turn 13. He initially limped after the highside, but then managed to get his Honda back into the pits. Marco Bezzecchi caught it on the next lap in the same corner, he made his way to the VR46 pits on foot.
While the Repsol-Honda garage was busy working to get at least one Márquez bike ready to ride again with fairing parts from Mir’s RC213V, world championship leader Pecco Bagnaia (Ducati) clearly took the lead on the track with a 1:22.028 min.
Two minutes from the end, Pramac-Ducati rider Johann Zarco set a 1:21.756 min, but this was immediately improved by Jack Miller and Luca Marini – and Marc Márquez crashed again after a first fast lap in turn 1! Zarco, on the other hand, flew off in turn 11.
Bagnaia stormed to pole position with a 1:21.409 min. This did not change in the finish due to the caution phases, because the supposed pole times of Martin and Bezzecchi were taken out of the ranking.
