Non-cash transactions in the country surged by more than 40% in volume during early 2026, according to data from the State Bank of Vietnam. That rapid expansion places strain on the core banking infrastructure underpinning everyday financial services. A system processing 13 million transactions a day in 2026 may need to handle substantially more by 2027 as millions of retail and small- and medium-sized enterprise customers move money.

The platform now underpins retail and SME banking operations for millions of customers, running on IBM Power servers orchestrated by Red Hat OpenShift, the enterprise Kubernetes platform that packages Temenos Core Banking as portable, auto-scaling container workloads.
The architecture Sacombank deployed is not a public cloud migration. IBM Power is a family of RISC-based enterprise servers—distinct from the commodity x86 hardware that powers most hyperscaler data centers—designed specifically for mission-critical, high-availability computing. IBM’s banking clients have run core financial workloads on Power hardware for decades because its architecture prioritizes zero planned downtime: the processors, memory systems, and I/O subsystems are designed so that components can be serviced and upgraded while the system keeps running.
What changed with Sacombank’s upgrade is the software layer sitting on that hardware. Red Hat OpenShift is an enterprise distribution of Kubernetes—the container orchestration standard that Google open-sourced in 2014 and that now runs the infrastructure underlying streaming platforms, gaming networks, and, increasingly, global banking applications. Containerization packages an application and everything it needs to run, including libraries, dependencies, and configuration, into a self-contained unit that can be started, stopped, and replicated automatically.

Temenos Core Banking System
For Sacombank’s Temenos core banking system, this shift produces three distinct gains simultaneously. First, horizontal scaling: instead of running Temenos on a fixed number of dedicated servers, OpenShift can spin up additional Temenos container instances automatically when transaction volume spikes on payroll days, at month-end, or during major payment events, and release those resources when demand falls. This eliminates the performance degradation that on-premises systems experience during peaks.
Second, deployment acceleration: OpenShift’s continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines automate the process of testing and deploying software updates. Instead of manual release procedures that can take days or weeks, containerized deployments can be validated and pushed to production in hours. This is the mechanism behind the three-times faster deployment cycles the upgrade produced.
Third, server consolidation: containers share the underlying operating system kernel, which means multiple Temenos instances can run on a single IBM Power server without the overhead associated with running separate virtual machines for each. That density gain is what produces the 50% reduction in server footprint, leaving fewer physical machines running more efficiently.
For a bank in a jurisdiction with active data sovereignty expectations from the State Bank of Vietnam, the choice of hybrid cloud over a full hyperscaler migration reflects deliberate architectural thinking. Regulated financial institutions face a specific challenge: customer account data, transaction records, and credit histories carry legal obligations about where they can be stored and processed.
