Safe and Secure Camp Setup in Givry: Scouts in Opwijk and the Importance of Precaution

The driving rain and the gusts of wind caused some fears to scouts from Opwijk (Flemish Brabant) busy setting up their camp in a field in Givry in the commune of Bertogne. The pre-camp, set up two days before the arrival of the bulk of the troops, was evacuated on Wednesday evening as a precaution.

The mayor of Bertogne did not want to take any risks. The young people spent the night sheltered from bad weather. “The manager, worried, called me on Wednesday around 6 p.m., explains Jean-Marc Franco. I went there and saw that some tents were moving. The safety of the young people was, it seems, not assured and I directly contacted the Luxembourg rescue zone. Decision was made to evacuate. The fifty scouts were relocated for one night in the village hall and the gymnasium.

Thursday morning, the young people continued their preparations. Captain Marc Javaux from the Luxembourg rescue zone went to the site to check the structures in place. “This camp consists of a large marquee and assigned tents, respectively in refectory and dormitories, he specifies. A series of requests and advice, such as reinforcing the securing and modifying the fixings of the posts, at 45 degrees and not vertical, were formulated. I advised them, moreover, to check twice a day if the fasteners are tight and to ensure that pockets of water do not form on the roof of the marquee. As far as the generating set is concerned, it must be checked by an approved organization given the risk associated with humidity.”

If everything is in order, the Chiro Pol-Opwijk camp can start this Friday. The animators, responsible for the assembly, should be joined by 170 children. “It was agreed that the Planu coordinator of the municipality of Bertogne will ensure, on Friday morning, that the young people have responded to the requests and that everyone’s safety is ensured. If necessary, the camp will be maintained”, concludes Marc Javaux.
