Saguenay Emergency Room: Dr. Bruno Hamel Shares Insight on Waiting Times and Triage System

2023-12-13 19:53:08

Patients are flocking to the Saguenay emergency room, as indicated by Dr. Bruno Hamel, chief emergency room doctor in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

“Emergencies are busier than they have ever been throughout Quebec.”

Dr Hamel indicates that the waiting time varies depending on the condition of the patients.

“One patient can generate a lot of time, so when you have two or three heavy ones, people who come in for minor things won’t be able to be seen as quickly.”

Nurses use the Canadian triage scale to establish priority.

“This triage system is made for a rating of 1 to 5. A patient who has a heart attack means zero waiting time.”

In the case of respiratory distress or shock, he will be seen quickly, continues the doctor.

Dr. Hamel recommends avoiding emergencies and finding alternatives if patients do not present serious symptoms.
