Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean: soon back in the red zone?

The situation has become worrying again in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean with a new increase in COVID-19 cases observed for several days, which could give rise to fears that the region may move into the red zone.

Nearly 107 cases have been confirmed in the region over the past three days.

And the variants are also very present in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean, representing two thirds of contaminations in Quebec. About 45% of the cases declared on Sunday were also people affected by one of the variants.

“We can see that the upward trend in the last few days in terms of active cases, in terms of outbreaks,” explained the regional director of Public Health, Dr. Donald Aubin.

This situation is also of concern to the minister responsible for the region, André Laforest.

“I am very worried with the increase in cases at the end of the week,” she said in particular.

The number of cases per 100,000 citizens in Lac-Saint-Jean is of great concern to the government with a rate of 208.2 in the MRC Maria-Chapdelaine and 138.8 in that of Domaine-du-Roy.

Andrée Laforest chaired on Monday a meeting of the regional coordination committee where several elected officials and Doctor Aubin sit. The discussions then focused on various hypotheses, including that of passing in red more problematic sectors within the region itself.

However, this committee will not have the final decision, but shows that the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean is currently under surveillance.

“I am going to talk to Doctor Aubin,” Minister Laforest said before this meeting. If we change color, do we put the whole region in another color? Do we change color? Maybe not either. We are at the end of the marathon. Go get vaccinated. It is important. We are at the end. And we will try to keep our color orange. ”

The regional director of public health is not, however, a supporter of this division of circles with the current situation.

“The potential for faster spread is higher in Saguenay than in Lac-Saint-Jean. From there to say to make a separation between the mediums, currently, I am not convinced that one would have a positive effect because of the number of variants which are settling and taking place in Saguenay ”, ruled Dr Aubin.

The data for the next few days will therefore be crucial, as the situation may change rapidly with the effect of variants.

An infected company

Four positive cases of variants were also confirmed within the Quebecissime entertainment company.

The infected people, all from Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean, are doing well and have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.

Preventive screening was requested from around fifty other company employees, all of whose results were negative.

No show being on the schedule until next May, all Quebecissime employees are teleworking.

Further analyzes are carried out by Public Health in order to establish the strain of the variants in question.
