Saint-Jean-de-Luz beats Langon and stays alive to maintain

Semi-finalists of Nationale 2 a year ago, the Luziens are experiencing a much more complicated exercise as they struggle not to go down. Last in the standings at the start of the match, the Basques know that it will be difficult to maintain their position. They nevertheless gave themselves the right to dream a little longer about a happy outcome – even if the chances are slim – by winning this Sunday against Langon (23-13), while a negative result would already have already condemned the red and green.

It is unknown in which division the SJLO will play next season. What we do know, however, is that by playing over the last two days as it did during the second half of its match against Langon, the Basque club (33 pts) could give way of red lantern in Limoges (34 pts…

Semi-finalists of Nationale 2 a year ago, the Luziens are experiencing a much more complicated exercise as they struggle not to go down. Last in the standings at the start of the match, the Basques know that it will be difficult to maintain their position. It is unknown in which division the SJLO will play next season. What we do know, however, is that by playing over the last two days as it did during the second half of its match against Langon, the Basque club (33 pts) could give way red lantern in Limoges (34 pts).

Juanicotena’s rage

Under the sun of the Blue Flag, Adrien Juanicotena’s partners found, for 40 minutes, part of their game made of movement, with passes after contact and generosity at all levels. “Defensively, in the second period, we were super efficient,” underlined David Irazoqui at the final whistle. The bench contributed quite a bit. We were very tense in the first half, we couldn’t keep our streaks going and in the second half, we managed to produce a little bit. »

Trailing by three points at the break (10-13), Saint-Jean caught up with the Gironde team, then went ahead in the score, thanks to the foot of Daubas (8 points) and the mischief of Julen Echeveste, who combined well with Adrien Juanicotena to plant the winning try in the corner (23-13, 78th). This same Juanicotena, excellent in the fight, had, as a good captain, set an example by scoring the first try of the game (7-3, 10th).

The scrum made the difference

This action was also the only one, in the first period, where the Luziens managed to string together three passes. It was almost a miracle, given the time spent by Langon in the opposing camp, to see that only three points separated the two teams at the break. “In the first half, the few balls we have, we lose them on the ground game while our rugby is about maintaining sequences,” recalled Irazoqui at the end. That’s something we couldn’t do because we were too tense and not efficient enough on the ground. At the break, we told them to make an effort on that and it was done quite well. »

The progression in the rucks was not the only factor which allowed the SJLO to recover. The Basque scrum, sometimes penalized in the first period, gradually took over. As such, the entry into play, at half-time, of the right-hander Lucas Santamaria, also very good in the running game, seems to have done the greatest good for the Luzian building. “The scrum also changes the refereeing,” noted Irazoqui. We took the upper hand and the referee started to penalize them a little more in the running game and this afternoon she made us win. »

David Irazoqui, Saint-Jean-de-Luz back coach: “A sigh of relief? I do not think so. We are simply happy. We are still here and we give ourselves the right to believe in it until the end. The match was decided on details, but we won it and in relation to the match, it was deserved. We come back to a point from Limoges, it will be nothing. In Niort, next week, beyond the result, we will have to play a consistent match and show our true colors, before the derby against Anglet. »
Christophe Hamacek, manager of Langon: “Congratulations to Saint-Jean-de-Luz who showed enormous generosity and who greatly deserves this victory. I congratulate them and I am happy for them. We ? We are a pale copy of what we know how to do. It’s not moving forward, it’s not good at winning, it’s not releasing the balls at the right time. We start with a non-qualification by playing like that. I’m expecting a huge reaction of pride against Rennes next weekend. »
