The ten women grew up in predominantly male backgrounds. “They are very independent women, who have a lot of courage and emancipate themselves from the path that has been traced for them by others”, enthuses Cassiope Henaff.
She was also interested in Anna Boch (19th century painter), “who was a patron of Van Gogh himself! She even bought a work from him during his lifetime. She was part of the group of Twenty, an avant-garde artistic circle which also included James Ensor and Félicien Rops” , to Léonie De Waha, pedagogue and feminist activist. In 1868, she created the Institut Supérieur Libre de Demoiselles, in Liège, allowing young girls to follow courses at primary and higher level.
Why did you choose Amélie Nothomb as one of the two figures representing the province of Luxembourg? “Because she still returns there regularly to recharge her batteries and places in the province appear in her books”.
Whether they were active in the religious, political, artistic, academic, literary, entrepreneurial fields, in the 7th or in the 20th century, these women accomplished great things.
