The art magazine “art” remains in the magazine portfolio of RTL Germany. The desired solution of a sale of the magazine did not come about, the television group announced on Wednesday in Cologne. RTL took over the magazine division of the Hamburg publishing house Gruner + Jahr in 2022 and reviewed the portfolio. Both houses belong to the Bertelsmann group.

Gruner + Jahr boss Bernd Hellermann said about “art”: “The magazine is profitable and well positioned. We will now – together with editor-in-chief Tim Sommer and the entire team – develop it further ourselves.” With its “excellent positioning at the top of the segment, the brand has great potential, especially in the digital world, which we want to develop.”

“art” was the last magazine in the magazine division that RTL originally wanted to part with. The listed media company intends to focus on the core brands of the magazine range such as “Stern” and “Geo” and look for synergies with moving images.

In February, RTL Germany announced the end of more than 20 magazines and the sale of several magazines. A total of around 700 of the 1,900 jobs would be lost, it was said at the time. In recent weeks, RTL Germany has successively announced a sale to various media houses for the knowledge brand “PM”, the business magazine “Business Punk” and the glossy magazine “Salon”. RTL is also selling its shares in Deutsche Medien-Manufaktur (DMM), which owns the magazines “Landlust” and “Essen & Drink”. It was also announced on Tuesday that the Spiegel Group would take over the RTL majority in the football magazine “11 Freunde” – antitrust authorities still have to approve it. The sale of the men’s cooking magazine “Beef!” failed, however, the magazine is discontinued in October.
