Hadi Matar Found Guilty of Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie

In a verdict delivered on Friday, hadi Matar was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree for his brutal attack on acclaimed novelist Salman Rushdie. The attack occurred in August 2022 at the Chautauqua institution in New York, leaving Rushdie with severe injuries, including the loss of his right eye.

A Gruesome Assault

Rushdie, 77, was stabbed multiple times in the head, neck, torso, and left hand. The attack resulted in significant damage to his liver and intestines, requiring emergency surgery and months of intensive recovery. Matar, 27, rushed the stage as Rushdie was being introduced for a talk about writer safety. Video footage of the attack, which was shown to the jury during the seven-day trial, played a significant role in the verdict.

Matar’s Sentence and Additional charges

Matar was also found guilty of assault in the second degree for stabbing Henry Reese, co-founder of Pittsburgh’s City of Asylum, who was participating in the talk with Rushdie. Matar faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and will be sentenced on April 23.

Matar also faces separate federal charges, accused of attempting to murder Rushdie as an act of terrorism and providing material support to Hezbollah. Hezbollah had issued support for the fatwa against Rushdie issued by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1988.

The Spark: “The Satanic Verses”

British-American Rushdie, an atheist born into a Muslim Kashmiri family in India, has lived under death threats as the 1988 publication of his novel “The Satanic Verses,” which Ayatollah Khomeini denounced as blasphemous.

Matar claimed to have attacked Rushdie because he believed the author had attacked Islam. This statement echoes the longstanding controversy surrounding “The Satanic Verses” and its perceived blasphemy.

The impact and Lasting Implications

The attack on Rushdie sent shockwaves through the literary world and beyond, raising concerns about the safety of writers and freedom of expression. It serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of religious extremism and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals.

“The video, I think, was extremely damaging to Mr Matar,” said Nathaniel Barone, Matar’s public defender, referring to the extensive video evidence presented at the trial.

As Matar was led out of the courtroom, he quietly uttered “Free Palestine,” a phrase he has repeated frequently during his time in court. This further highlights the complex geopolitical tensions surrounding the case.

The verdict provides a sense of justice for Rushdie and his supporters, but the long-term impact of this attack will continue to be felt for years to come.
