The PHAC revealed that the country now has 63 laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonellosis, more than half of which (35) occurred in Quebec. British Columbia and Ontario have had 12 cases each, while the last ones were in the Atlantic provinces.

Consumption of cantaloupes resulted in the hospitalization of 17 people, including one who died. The province of residence of the person who died of salmonellosis has not been specified.

As of Wednesday, PHAC counted just 26 people who had contracted salmonellosis and just six hospitalizations.

New brand of cantaloupes to throw away

This announcement came just hours after the addition of a second brand of cantaloupe to be thrown away due to the risks it poses.

After being warned to get rid of Malichita brand cantaloupes in their possession, Canadians must now throw away their Rudy brand melons if they want to avoid contracting the disease, the Canadian Inspection Agency announced of Food (CFIA).

Unlike Malichita cantaloupes, Rudy cantaloupes were still available for sale across the country on Friday. Canadians aren’t the only ones who should be wary of their cantaloupes.

On the United States side, 99 people have fallen ill to date, including 45 who ended up in hospital. The disease affects 32 states. Two patients died, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which updated its data Friday.

Remember that it is impossible to identify foods contaminated by bacteria Salmonella because they do not give off a suspicious odor and have no visible alteration.

In most people, salmonellosis causes fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Salmonellosis can, however, cause serious complications, mainly in children under 5 years old, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
