Salzburg-Derby: Very good talks with Grödig, but it is also possible to switch to Upper Austria

Three days before the regional league football club Austria Salzburg has to announce the venue for the cup match against Red Bull Salzburg, discussions took place on Tuesday with those responsible for Grödig. Although the meeting is viewed positively by both sides, the Violets are still considering another venue.

At the end of September (26th, 27th or 28th), the Salzburg derby between the two arch-rivals Austria Salzburg and Red Bull Salzburg will take place in the second round of the ÖFB Cup. The Violets have home rights and are now looking for the best venue. The home stadium in Maxglan would be the wish of many fans, but for safety reasons the small stadium is probably out of the question. A detour to Grödig, on the other hand, does. “I want this derby to be played in Salzburg. The talks with Austria were very good. I don’t want to make big money with this game and I made the violets a very fair offer,” emphasizes Grödig boss Christian Haas doesn’t want to give any details. His opposite number, Claus Salzmann, left the meeting with a positive feeling: “It was a conversation at eye level, we will decide by Thursday where we will play.”

Red Bull Arena not an issue

And Grödig is probably the only option in the state of Salzburg. Although Salzmann and Co. considered whether the hit should take place in the Red Bull Arena, this idea was rejected again. On Tuesday, however, a new opportunity arose: LASK officials got in touch and offered to play the game in Linz. Advantage: While in Grödig “only” 4,500 spectators could be seated, in Linz 20,000 tickets could be sold at best. “LASK will clarify on Wednesday whether the ÖFB would allow the Salzburg derby in Linz. If we get the green light, then negotiations will start. LASK’s offer is very tempting. But basically I think that the derby in Salzburg should be played,” stresses Salzmann.
