Salzburg still plays in a league of its own

It is rare that an FC Salzburg game has taken place in recent years in which the subscription champions did not top the Austrian Bundesliga table. Tomorrow (5 p.m.) it’s that time again against LASK. The gap to league leaders Sturm Graz is only one point and the lead over LASK is five points.

It is a first game that shows the direction of whether there will be a three-way battle at the top of the table in the long term or whether things will go back in the direction that the two clubs’ key figures suggest. Because financially, Red Bull Salzburg is and remains in a league of its own compared to LASK.

  • 206.5:28.2 million euros market value: According to transfermarkt.at, the Salzburg squad is worth seven times as much as the LASK team. For comparison: Even the value of FC Liefering, Salzburg’s second team in the second division, is 14.3 million – which would put them in sixth place in the Bundesliga. Good for LASK: Strahinja Pavlovic, Salzburg’s 25 million player, who has almost the same market value as the entire LASK squad, is suspended after his red card in the game against Klagenfurt.
  • 30:1 Million euros spent on the transfer market: With the transfer fees for Mads Bistrup (6 million), Aleksa Terzic (5.5), Petar Ratkov (5) and Nicolo Turco (4), the entire LASK squad can be paid for an entire season. Andres Andrade was signed by LASK for 500,000 euros. Maxim Taloverov cost around 400,000 euros in rental fees. The rest were free transfers – also in the knowledge that players like Ebrima Darboe will need time to be match fit.
  • 77:13 million euros income on the transfer market: The fact that Salzburg can spend so much is of course also due to the successful transfer summer. The sales of Benjamin Sesko (24 million), Nicolas Seiwald (20), Noah Okafor (14), Philipp Köhn (8) and Junior Adamu (6) alone brought 72 million euros into the club’s coffers. At LASK, Keito Nakamura accounts for 12 of the 13 million euros in transfer proceeds. Efthymios Koulouris, sold to Pogon Stettin for around one million, has already scored eight goals in the Polish league and the European Cup.
  • 56:15 million euros in salaries: The last official annual financial statements for both clubs are from June 30, 2022. Salzburg reports 56.5 million euros in salaries, LASK 15 million euros. Salzburg’s FC Liefering branch estimated 8.1 million euros in personnel expenses in the second division.

Michorl in the starting line-up?

LASK was a striker in the Croatian U21 national football team Marin Ljubicic Most recently he gained self-confidence with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Greece, but then left injured. Whether there will be a comeback against Salzburg tomorrow will only be decided on match day. Struck or injured will also be missing Branko Jovicic, Rene Renner and Lenny Pintor also Ebrima Darboe. This means the chances of using Peter Michorl (pictured) has become even bigger in the starting eleven. The 28-year-old midfielder was last at the late Robert Zulj Darboe came on as a substitute in the fixed 1-0 home win over Altach.
