Salzburg’s Inconsistency Costs Them Victory Against SK Rapid

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Salzburg Shows Promise but Still Needs Consistency

Red Bull Salzburg’s resurgence continues, but a 2-2 draw against SK Rapid showcased the team’s lingering inconsistency. Although demonstrating flashes of the high-quality play expected of them, the lack of a decisive edge prevented Salzburg from converting close calls into a win.

Substitute Amar Dedic found positives, stating, “I think overall we were the better team. But I think you can take the 2-2 result positively. We played a good game and I think we’re going in the right direction. That’s the most important thing.”

However, Nicolas Capaldo, scorer for the third game in a row and a key figure in Salzburg’s upward trajectory, expressed frustration.

“Today we lost two points,” he lamented. “We generally lose too many points in games that we should win. Today we took the lead twice, and they came back twice – it’s difficult because we can’t finish games.”

Mads Bistrup echoed this sentiment. “We have two clear chances. You simply have to make it 2-0; that’s always the story for us at the moment – we’re not good enough up front.”

Despite the draw, Coach Pep Lijnders maintained a balanced perspective, revealing, “It was a fantastic game for the neutral spectator. So much happened. It was just a fight between two teams who really wanted to play.”

Nevertheless, the two contrasting faces displayed by Salzburg on the day ultimately highlighted the need for progression.

“It was purely tactical,” the Dutchman commented. “The number of combinations, dribbles, and chances in the final third – how we played together, that was good at some points. Other times, we had problems getting the ball to the striker. We allowed Rapid too much pressure in midfield. In some phases, some players didn’t press enough, others weren’t far enough back.”

Salzburg can take solace in Capaldo’s re-found hunger and goalscoring form, a crucial element, as Lijnders noted:

“He works a lot around the box, but the way he finishes his chances is unbelievable. I want to see more of that. That second goal against Hartberg where you really have to believe in yourself to finish like that. This kind he has to keep up.

Capaldo also brings uppercut for the sky on the pitch, “He is very important for the team.”

With the intensity needed for top-flight success slowly returning, Salzburgかい once again know what they need to do.

But the following encounter against PSG will be a totally different kind of challenge. Next week promises to be stressful for Salzburg, with a supplementary game against Austria Klagenfurt still looming. This comes at an inconvenient time with the majority of the Bundesliga already on winter break.

Rosminger’s squad is rallying and finding its rhythm. It’s simply not quite there yet.

What are the psychological factors contributing to Salzburg’s inconsistency?
