Samedan GR: debris falls off when abseiling – man (28) and woman (36) fall

On Thursday, at 2 p.m., a 36-year-old and a 28-year-old were descending from the Piz Morteratsch in the Bernina region. As the man abseiled down to the woman, debris broke loose above him. The man and the woman waiting below were hit by stones and carried away.

The two fell a good five meters down into a bergschrund. According to the Graubünden canton police, the man was able to free himself and call for help. Third parties alerted the emergency services by telephone and initiated the rescue measures. Two Rega crews, supported by three rescue specialist helicopters from the SAC Bernina section, rescued the casualties.

The woman, who had sustained several leg fractures, was flown to the cantonal hospital in Graubünden in Chur and the slightly injured man was flown to the hospital in Samedan. The alpine police are clarifying the exact circumstances that led to the crash of the two people.
