The Secretary of State refuses to welcome third-country nationals from Ukraine to Belgium if they can be safe in their country.
In several countries of the European Union, the question was quickly resolved. Anyone fleeing the war in Ukraine falls under the European Temporary Protection Directive, which gives them the immediate right to receive protection and help to settle.
This is not the case in Belgium. African students fleeing the war in Ukraine cannot ask for this sesame which will allow them to obtain a residence permit, to be able to work, to benefit from social assistance or to find accommodation. Sammy Mahdi (CD&V) believes that these migrants must return to their country.
