Samsung considers expanding security updates beyond five years

In an interview conducted by SamMobile at SDC23 (Samsung Developers Conference 2023), South Korean engineer Shin-Chul Baik said that the company is actively discussing how to extend support for security updates beyond five years.

He says this vision is in line with Samsung’s approach to offering longer support for its devices and that the company is preparing to go beyond the five years currently provided.

However, the SamMobile website emphasizes that this does not mean that Samsung will offer Android updates for more than five years, but rather that it is considering expanding the time for security updates.

In other words, even if your Galaxy doesn’t receive the most current version of Android, it will continue to receive security packages beyond five years. Currently, Samsung is one of the main brands when it comes to updates, even on the simplest devices.

The company revealed that it takes care of updates for more than 1 billion devices worldwide and annually, this mark reaches 10 billion. If the South Korean company really expands software support, the consumer will benefit from keeping the device updated for longer.
