Samsung has officially confirmed the end of major software upgrades for the Galaxy S23 smartphone generation, with One UI 9.0 based on Android 17 marking the final comprehensive operating system update for the series. The lineup fulfills its promised four major Android upgrades, while security patches continue beyond that window.
The Final Chapter for the 2023 Flagship Fleet
The lifecycle cutoff spans the entire Galaxy S23 portfolio. This includes the standard Galaxy S23, the S23+, the S23 Ultra, and the S23 FE. Internal planning previously weighed extending support through Android 18. Samsung ultimately locked the timeline at Android 17, fulfilling the original promise to provide four major Android upgrades.
Industry analysts note that a fractional release like One UI 9.5 is not to be expected for this generation. Samsung applied the same playbook to the previous S22 lineup, which did not receive an update to One UI 8.5.
Rollout Timeline and Core Security Additions
The transition to One UI 9.0 is slated to hit Galaxy S23 units toward the end of 2026. This rollout follows initial software deployments for the newer Galaxy S26 series and the current foldable devices. The software update brings refined graphical performance, smoother interface animations, and expanded options for quick access.
Security architecture receives a notable measure in this build. Samsung is introducing a protection lock that will automatically secure the smartphone once 13 incorrect password attempts are registered.
Nineteen Additional Devices Reaching the Finish Line
The S23 series isn’t alone in facing this software milestone. A total of 19 distinct Samsung devices will see major operating system versions halt with One UI 9.0. Foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are included in the cutoff.
Mid-range hardware and tablets also face the boundary:
- Galaxy A-Series: A54, A34, and A24
- Galaxy M-Series: M54 and M34
- Galaxy F-Series: F54 and F34
- Tablets: Galaxy Tab S9 lineup and the 2024 edition of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
Post-Update Security Support Windows
Reaching the end of version upgrades does not mean an immediate vulnerability exposure window. Samsung’s post-upgrade support policy guarantees extended patch lifecycles. The Galaxy S23 series retains dedicated security maintenance for a total of five years. Meanwhile, the other 18 affected device types are scheduled to receive security updates for at least one year following the receipt of One UI 9.0.
