Samsung might kill one of the Galaxy S27 Ultra’s rear cameras

Samsung is preparing major hardware changes for its early 2027 flagship lineup, including a rumored 5,700mAh silicon-carbon battery and a streamlined triple rear camera setup on the Galaxy S27 Ultra that drops the long-standing 3x telephoto lens in favor of sensor cropping and a 5x zoom.

Rear Camera Overhaul and the Loss of the 3x Zoom

Samsung’s Ultra smartphone line is reportedly shedding a fixture it has carried since the Galaxy S21 Ultra in 2021.

The remaining setup is tipped to include a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP 5x telephoto shooter.

The official added that the decision was made to cut costs due to severe pressure on manufacturing expenses. For everyday users, losing the 3x lens removes a focal length that many photographers rely on for natural-looking portraits and close-up macro shots without perspective distortion. Instead of optical glass, Samsung reportedly plans to rely on an in-sensor crop from its high-resolution 200MP main sensor to handle intermediate zoom levels.

Silicon-Carbon Batteries and the Race for Capacity

While the camera setup is shrinking in lens count, the internal power source is getting a massive physical upgrade. Leaks shared by tipster Anthony on X indicate that the Galaxy S27 Ultra could pack a 5,700mAh silicon-carbon battery, delivering a substantial leap over the 5,000mAh capacity that Samsung has used across multiple generations from the S20 Ultra to the S26 Ultra.

For years, competitors like Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Realme have surged ahead in battery capacity by adopting silicon-carbon chemistry, which holds significantly more charge than traditional lithium-ion cells within similar physical dimensions. Samsung executive VP and head of smartphone R&D Sung-Hoon Moon acknowledged internally that Galaxy smartphones lag behind competitors in battery performance.

Design Shifts, Privacy Displays, and Internal Hardware

Beyond cameras and batteries, leaks point to a complete visual and internal redesign. The familiar floating camera ring layout used since the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to give way to a unified camera module on the back panel.

On the front, the flagship is expected to retain a 6.9-inch QHD+ Privacy Display designed to block prying eyes, paired with an upgraded 16MP selfie camera featuring optical image stabilization. Under the hood, the phone is tipped to run on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro for Galaxy processor alongside 12GB or 16GB of RAM, though some industry leaks suggest it may miss out on newer LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage standards.

Pricing Pressures and Market Realities in South Korea

Manufacturing cost pressures and a broader global component crisis are casting a shadow over retail figures. According to information shared by tipster kro_roe, launch prices in South Korea for the upcoming flagship are expected to rise by up to 150,000 won, which translates to approximately 90 euros or US$105 higher. While moderate compared to anticipated hikes for mid-range models in Europe, it underscores the mounting financial friction in the premium smartphone market.
